Becoming Human

Artist’s Statement – Becoming Human

In 2021, I was given instructions to “work with the Archetypes,” but I didn’t really know what that meant.

A friend gave me two lovely pencils (Palomino Blackwing Pearl, and Blackwing Natural). I got some drawing paper and began making childish drawings, mostly from memories.

Meanwhile, my “research” into the Archetypes (of course, I went to the Interwebs) gave me some ideas. It was pretty superficial; some people spend years and years on this, actually read books by Jung, and go into analysis.

I’d bought some lovely 8 by 10 inch Polar Luster Metallic Paper for my Inkjet printer without knowing what I would do with it. I scanned the pencil drawings, put them onto Photoshop, added colours and textures, and sometimes photographs, then printed on this paper.

I felt I needed to explain myself. I’m a writer first after all. So I put 35 of the images in some kind of order and wrote a sort of essay/ poem to go with them.
This became a 60-page book, Becoming Human, and the name of this show.
The show itself has 52 images.

I’m amused to think that the show and book are “a shallow look at some deep subjects,” but seriously, this has felt like a guided process, going quickly and intuitively, and was so much fun.
